Let me get this out there right upfront: I do not want to take your porn away. I am against the exploitation and objectification of women, but I am also against censorship and Puritanical bullshit, and porn tangles all of those issues up in such a way as to make me feel uncharacteristically dispassionate about the whole mess. My official position on porn: Whatever.

So if I saw a compelling argument that porn is good for society, I would probably not go out of my way to nitpick it. But Milton Diamond’s article at the Scientist, in which he discusses data that shows more porn is correlated with lower sexual assault rates, is not that argument. “[I]n every region investigated,” he writes, “researchers have found that as pornography has increased in availability, sex crimes have either decreased or not increased … Surprisingly few studies have linked the availability of porn in any society with antisocial behaviors or sex crimes. Among those studies none have found a causal relationship and very few have even found one positive correlation.”

Interesting. And if you’ve been going around saying that increased availability of porn causes an increase in sex crimes (or at least, that it did through the 1990s; Diamond doesn’t cite more recent findings on this subject), maybe you should stop. But speaking of the difference between correlation and causation, isn’t it kind of a big leap from that to “More porn equals less rape”?

The casual sex backlash is here. Even so-called sex-positive feminists are starting to express their shame and regret over past one-night stands, says Jessica Grose in Slate. Take, for example, the comedy of errors that’s been unfolding over the past several weeks, ever since Apple decided to rein in its more hot and bothered apps. Over 3 billion apps have been downloaded on iTunes since the App store debuted in July of 2008, and, human nature being what is, a fair number of those involve boobies. But in light of increasing consumer complaints from, as Apple’s head of worldwide product marketing, Philip W. Schiller, told the New York Times recently, “women who found the content getting too degrading and objectionable, as well as parents who were upset with what their kids were able to see,” the company began quietly removing content. In just one day in February, Apple purged over 4,000 apps. Arrivederci, Sexy Hangman. Sayonara, Strip Poker. Hasta la vista, Suicide Girls. In its zeal to ban booty, Apple even briefly 86′ed a benign bathing suit shopping app called Simply Beach.

But T&A fans don’t go down without a fight. Faced with the encroaching threat of having their girlie bits taken away, consumers started descending on the App Store like it was a Piggly Wiggly right before a snowmageddon. Let the stripper-app hoarding commence! And when a relatively tame, cleavage-based app called Tubes! somehow escaped the app-ocalypse, it saw its sales leap from a measly $30 a day to a frankly hilarious $10,000 in a single week. Stick it to the man, breast lovers.

SAN FRANCISCO — The adult-entertainment industry is in a tailspin, shattering the notion that it is one of the few recession-proof industries.

The slump is especially stinging because technology — which helped adult-entertainment enterprises reap riches through innovations such as video streaming, webcameras and online payments — is contributing to the misery.

DVDs and online pay sites, which make up the majority of porn-related sales, are in a free fall largely because of the rise of so-called tube sites.

Stormy Daniels, Louisiana Porn Star, Expected To Announce Whether She Will Challenge Vitter For Senate Seat

AP – The Louisiana-born porn star who was flirting with a run for the U.S. Senate from her home state will announce “very soon” whether she’s really going to make the 2010 race against incumbent David Vitter, her political spokesman says.

Stormy Daniels has had little to say about the race since summer. She continues to promote her adult entertainment ventures and personal appearances online. But, as of Monday, the political Web site set up to promote and fund a possible candidacy, www.teamstormy.com, had not been updated in over six months and there hadn’t been a TeamStormy “tweet” on Twitter since last August. Louisiana’s Secretary of State still lists the Stormy Daniels Senate Exploratory Committee, a limited liability corporation formed in May, as being in good standing with the state but it’s unclear whether it has been doing fund raising or other political activity.

She acknowledged last year that she has not lived in the state for years. There is no sign she has re-established residency, which would be required for a Senate run.

Daniels didn’t respond to a request for an interview. Brian Welsh, the Democratic operative listed as an officer in the exploratory committee, said in response to an e-mail query that there will be an official statement about her plans “very soon” but he gave no specific date.

In July, Daniels (whose real name is Stephanie Clifford) was arrested in Tampa, Fla., after her husband told police that she hit him several times during a dispute about laundry and unpaid bills. Charges were later dropped.
