Dearest CrunchGear readers: I recently had the honor and privilege of speaking to Karen Dyer, who is not only the voice of Sheva Alomar, from Resident Evil 5, but who also did said character’s motion capture. I hope you enjoy it on this day, our day of freedom.

Obviously, “K” is for Karen, and “N” is for Nicholas. With that…

N: Well, first off congratulations. Resident Evil 5 was a big hit. It sold something like 4 million copies.

K: That’s what I hear!

N: Excellent. But before we get into the game, I just wanted to bring up something I saw on your bio. It says here you’re known for your circus skills, and I just wanted to say how that awesome that is. And I wanted to ask, where do you study that? Because I don’t know if your average community college offers that type of training.

karendyer

K: You might get a juggling course, but maybe not everything that I do. I’ve actually been doing a bit of circus stuff for a while. I’ve been doing fire eating, breathing, twirling performance, stilts, juggling, walking ball, and aerial. It started off just kind of knowing the right people and hanging out with them, and then getting involved with different circus troupes and doing a little bit of circus myself. Now I’ve kind of created this alter ego, Eva La Dare, that I get to use as my sexy circus outlet, if you will. [Note: Here's a video of Eva La Dare in action. I'd say it's mildly NSFW because she's eating fire in a sort of exotic dance setting.]

Report: Australia To Block Web Access To ‘Mature’ Games

The Australian federal government plans to block internet access to sites pertaining to video games not rated MA15+ or below, according to a report by Melbourne‘s The Age.

The country’s lack of a video game rating that applies to games with content aimed at those 18 years of age or older — which does exist in Australian film ratings as R18+ — has long been a frustration for video game publishers. Games that would fall into that hypothetical category are currently denied classification and barred from sale at retail, effectively banning them.

Under the new internet filtering, detailed by communications minister Stephen Conroy (pictured right) it could also become impossible to obtain such games — labeled “RC,” for “refused classification” — through online means. According The Age, the filtering could apply to sites that have unclassified games for sale, for download, or playable in a browser.

Lara Croft Tomb Raider The Cradle of Life

After starring in two Tomb Raider films as Lara Croft, it looks like Angelina Jolie is out as everyone’s favorite globe-trotting skimpy-clothed adventuress.  Film producer Dan Lim has been talking about the next movie in the franchise, and goodness gracious oh my, it’s a prequel reboot origin story.

“We’re rebooting Lara Croft…It’s a great origin story that we’re going to tell, a very character-oriented, I would say more realistic than the past Lara Croft movies…It’s not full-on action. I would say it’s like Terminator, it’s character driven action. For me, the Lara Croft games and movies have gone a little too action-oriented. I wanted to have action, but with character.”

Videos games and sex have a storied history, as anyone who’s spent time in a dorm room full of freshman boys playing “Tomb Raider” could tell you. But despite the genre’s reputation for exploitative babes in hotpants and the notorious “jiggle physics,” an article in the Guardian argues that sex does not, in fact, sell video games.

Here’s the case, made by Alexander Gambotto-Burke: In 2004, Playboy began publishing a yearly “Gaming grows up” feature showing video game heroines in the buff. But many of the games included in the issue have either reported huge losses or ceased production entirely.

Far from the porn-crazed sex ghouls they’re frequently portrayed as, male videogame players appear to be developing quite a potent resistance to exploitative, sex-based marketing practices. Indeed, even Lara Croft has given into this progressive zeitgeist: her breasts and lips have shrunk in recent years, and the rest of her body has been reduced to more anatomically feasible proportions. On cue, her critical stock has risen, and while the first two games in the post-2006 Tomb Raider revamp (Legend and Anniversary) sold unfavourably compared with past instalments, the latest, Underworld, is selling healthily after a lacklustre launch.

Grand Theft Auto IV

EA sent me a copy of The Godfather II for the PlayStation 3 last week. A Godfather trilogy fan, I was excited to see how the game would turn out.

After escaping from Cuba, I was ordained the Corleone family‘s New York boss and set out to take over some turf. The first place I was told to capture was a bordello. I had to make it clear to the owner, through violence, that I was now in-charge. After a short drive, I walked through the “front” business and proceeded into the brothel. I was greeted by a woman offering me sexual favors. But there was something special about this prostitute. Unlike the dozens I’d seen in the Grand Theft Auto series, this one was topless.

It wasn’t the first time a woman has been shown nude or partially nude in a video game. Nudity in gaming dates back all the way to the Atari 2600 when Mystique, a “Swedish Erotica” video game developer, started making adult titles for the console.

Ladies, you might want to rethink buying your bf a new Xbox game for his birthday. Listen to this: A new study found that a third of men would prefer to play video games rather than have sex with their partners. Even scarier stats: When newly released video games were thrown into the equation, the percent of men opting for virtual stimulation skyrocketed to 72 percent. Lame.

If men can find better things to do, we certainly can. So tell us, ladies, what’s more satisfying to you than doing the deed? Vote in our poll or write your own answers in the comments.

The game-design world is definitely male-dominated, which is why we’re psyched that two women managed to pick up top honors at this year’s Game Design Challenge at the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco.

What’s even better? The game’s about losing your virginity and they managed to design a game in significantly less time than their fellow competitors.

Heather Kelley and Erin Robinson stepped in with only 36 hours to create a game after another competitor left the contest because the theme “your first time” was a little too risqué for her employer.

Yes boy and girls, NC-17 content has just hit the App Store. And here I thought Apple employees were a bunch of prudes for removing applications with pictures of scantily clad women. But now, while the floodgates may not exactly be open to all types of adult content — Apple has said in the past that it would keep explicit sexual material out of the App Store — there appears to be some new places that Apple is allowing developers to explore.

Specifically, Apple lists the following warnings on the page for Amateur Surgeon:

Rated 17+ for the following:

Frequent/Intense Mature/Suggestive Themes

Infrequent/Mild Horror/Fear Themes

Frequent/Intense Profanity or Crude Humor

Frequent/Intense Cartoon or Fantasy Violence

Infrequent/Mild Sexual Content or Nudity

Infrequent/Mild Realistic Violence

Infrequent/Mild Alcohol, Tobacco, or Drug Use or References

You’ll note that both “nudity” and “drug use” make that list. Just how far Apple is going to allow developers to take those two often prickly issues remains to be seen. After all, Amateur Surgeon is a comedy game with cartoon graphics — real blood, violence, sex or drug use may still cross the line.
