The “groundbreaking sex robot” is neither groundbreaking nor a true robot.
By Veronica BelmontPosted Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at 9:32 AM ET
Usually when I write about a new tech product, I like to have a little “hands-on” time with the device. Perhaps fortunately, that’s not the case with the Roxxxy TrueCompanion, the latest in high-tech sex toys, unleashed at this year’s Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas. While I was next-door at the Consumer Electronics Show, checking out the latest in 3-D televisions and e-book readers, Roxxxy was making waves with sex industry professionals and robot bloggers alike.
Creator Douglas Hines believes his “sex robot” to be the most realistic in existence, with several different personality modes built into each unit (Mature Martha, Frigid Farrah, Wild Wendy) that can be further tailored and shared with other users online. It also has software that responds to touch and offers audio feedback based on activity. While the technology inside of Roxxxy is very intriguing, I’m more curious about how artificial intelligence in the bedroom will change how we real humans view sex.
Starting at $7,000 and topping off at $9,000, depending on how customizable you’d like your doll, Roxxxy isn’t priced low enough to achieve mass-market adoption—any plans to add sophisticated electronics to your existing sex routine are probably a few years off. But as the technology advances and the prices of parts drop, we’ll begin to see more devices out there like Roxxxy. With such advanced sex toys readily available, could a real woman’s role in the bedroom become obsolete?

The world’s “first” X-rated fembot literally has no moves Video
By Tracy Clark-Flory
Meet Roxxxy, the “world’s first sex robot.” She has folks buzzing with excitement after her debut at this weekend’s Adult Entertainment Expo (never mind that she isn’t actually the first of her kind). Given the hype, and the use of the term “robot,” you might be envisioning something along the lines of a Real Doll that can actually perform sexy moves — or at the very least do “The Robot.” In reality, she’s more like an X-rated version of Talking Elmo. She can’t walk or move her arms, but when you touch Roxxxy she will purr things like, ” Where you gonna put that?” As creator Douglas Hines demonstrated at the event (video below), clumsily groping at her vagina will elicit a moan; meanwhile, she remains paralyzed in her pre-programed ecstasy.

Bespectacled techies cross paths with corseted porn stars selling high-tech sex toys and tools of all shapes and sizes. Some say technology revolutions like the VHS format, video chatting and the digital delivery of content got a boost from the tech-savvy purveyors and fans of adult fantasy, but the fruits of the tech-adult marriage take a variety of forms.Every year, scattered between the many booths showcasing porn perennials — XXX movies, traditional accessories and attire — are a few vendors that take technology to a whole new, sometimes head-scratching, level. Sex Toys That Will Change Your Life / Violet Blue: Can a sex toy change your life? For many, the answer is yes
Dec 23rd

- Image by violet.blue via Flickr
Having an orgasm used to be so arduous and difficult, it’s no wonder many old people have never had one, or if they have, they seldom talk about it or tell their spawn about having one. In times of yore, before YouTube videos and electricity, rubbing one out was akin to deciding to make a trip from New York to San Francisco in a covered wagon. You could get halfway there, but if something broke down and it was winter, you might have to eat something horrifying to make it out alive. With your pants down, bandits could attack you at any moment. There were vibrators, but they were made of wood and powered by pedaling, or frightened rodents running in little exercise wheels. Everything had to be done by hand. There was no lube until 1910, so if the friction didn’t kill you, fire was always a concern. You had to use corncobs as freshwipes. People had to make their own amateur porn.
The horrors of the past are mostly behind us. Now that we’re more civilized about our sexuality, we no longer have to suffer achieving orgasms through primitive methods, carving our dildos out of root vegetables or whatever porn starlets did in caveman times. Now we have technology. Now we have plastic. We have batteries. We have bandwidth. And fortunately, we have handcuff keys.
And this has all changed the way we, er, come together. And not necessarily for the holidays. Sex toys are now, for many people, life-changing items. When I idly asked the Twitter and the Facebook what sex toys had changed people’s lives, I didn’t expect the overwhelming response; now that people are more sexually sophisticated they’ve traded shame for sexual savvy, and over a hundred people stepped right up to volunteer to me which toy, when used with amour, made their view of the world a little brighter.

I used to think “sexual enhancement” just meant “sex toys.” That is, until I started exploring the wonderful—and sometimes utterly weird—world of mechanical and electronic sex augmentations. Here’s what’s happening now and what will happen soon.
As you’ll see, existing innovations take our tongues, fingers, vulvas and penises to the next level. But the future of sex augmentations appears to lie in biometrics and in networking. Soon toys will learn from and interact with our bodies’ responses, with or without a partner, while teledildonics will help people separated by vast distances get closer (and wetter).

A call by university researchers for vibrator-seeking women has the local religious community hot and bothered
By Tracy Clark-Flory
Duke University researchers are looking for female students to attend a sex toy party, “engage in sexually explicit conversation” with other young ladies and, if they so desire, buy some titillating playthings at a great discount– all in the name of science. Wait a sec, no, make that “were looking,” past tense — all of the participant spots have filled up rather quickly. Fancy that.
Know who else has responded to the study just as feverishly? A religious leader on campus, whose blood pressure has risen for an entirely different reason: He’s pissed. Father Joe Vetter, director of the Duke Catholic Center, said: “I think it can give the impression that the university is endorsing behavior that I don’t think the university should endorse.” God forbid the university allow its researchers to issue an open call for women — that’s right, adult women — who are interested in attending a sex toy party to help further the study of sex. No one’s being forced into a sex den filled with vibrating silicone and rubber. Women are volunteering to check out some naughty novelty items and, both before and after, speak openly with researchers about their attitudes toward sex.

Sex and the Eco-City: Getting It On Is Getting Greener – TIME
Oct 23rd

In many ways, choosing a sex toy is not unlike buying a car. Walk into most adult shops, and the new-car smell is undeniable. Salespeople tout motor speed and durability. And then there are emissions to consider.
That’s carbon emissions, of course. As the green movement makes its way into the bedroom, low lighting is a must–to conserve electricity–but so are vegan condoms, organic lubricants and hand-cranked vibrators. (See five eco-friendly sex accessories.)
Another big enviro-sex trend: birth control that’s au naturel. Like all good Catholics, my husband and I had to attend church-run marriage prep before we tied the knot last year. I was surprised, however, during the hard sell on natural family-planning (NFP), that this updated version of the rhythm method was being advertised not only as morally correct but also as “organic” and “green.” I was even more surprised when I found out that some of the most popular instructors of NFP–known in secular circles as the Fertility Awareness Method–are non-Catholics who praise it as a means of avoiding both ingesting chemicals and excreting them into rivers and streams.

Move over, Real Doll. Hello, robot sex pillow – Broadsheet – Salon.com

During the most unwieldy parts of my pregnancies, the only way I could sleep was by spooning a huge plaid pregnancy pillow called something embarrassing like a Snoozle, or a Froogle, or a Foshizzle, or something or other. With me in my comfy flannel PJs, my pillow and I looked like a huge plaid G-clef, and my husband looked left out. Which is simply to say that yes, I know and embrace the wonder of a well-placed body pillow.
But now there is the Funktiontide — or at least there might be, says its designer Stefan Ulrich — and now, remarkably, we may behold something perhaps even more unsettling than the Real Doll. Ulrich says his pillow prototype, which would use advanced robotics and artificial muscle technology to move and change shape depending on how you hold it, is but a polymer harbinger of the day when bleak, alienated humans will turn to “robots” for emotional satisfaction. (Yeah, like I didn’t already do that with my second husband. Folks!) That, or as we see in this technically G-rated, but somehow NSFW video, maybe the Funktiontide is nothing more than a Shmoo with benefits.
While the video’s human co-star appears rather satisfied with his lot, Ulrich is not unaware that his Pillbury Dough-bot raises some juicy issues. “…[T]he the work’s intention is to create a provocative picture for discussion, which enables us to question how much we want technological products to satisfy our emotional needs,” goes his commentary. “The ambiguity of this scenario is, that it could be understood as a solution to a wide range of different kinds of loneliness. But it might as well be understood as a scenario which should be avoided by all means possible.” Speaking as someone who practically sleeps with her iPhone, I’m sure I have no idea what he’s talking about.
