Chicago magazine has a long feature devoted to whether or not Playboy magazine will survive. I worked for Playboy for years. My conclusion? I doubt it.
For five years, I worked for Playboy TV. Granted, it wasn’t the magazine, but we were subject to the same rules to which all divisions of Playboy Enterprises, Inc. were subject, and it wasn’t the freewheeling, nonstop party workplace you might think.
I worked for a small production company out in the San Fernando Valley that had been contracted to produce “original programming” for the Playboy network. The hallways usually reeked of pot, and the occasional naked girl did pop up, but most of the time, it was work. Work that happened to involve naked people.

Let me get this out there right upfront: I do not want to take your porn away. I am against the exploitation and objectification of women, but I am also against censorship and Puritanical bullshit, and porn tangles all of those issues up in such a way as to make me feel uncharacteristically dispassionate about the whole mess. My official position on porn: Whatever.
So if I saw a compelling argument that porn is good for society, I would probably not go out of my way to nitpick it. But Milton Diamond’s article at the Scientist, in which he discusses data that shows more porn is correlated with lower sexual assault rates, is not that argument. “[I]n every region investigated,” he writes, “researchers have found that as pornography has increased in availability, sex crimes have either decreased or not increased … Surprisingly few studies have linked the availability of porn in any society with antisocial behaviors or sex crimes. Among those studies none have found a causal relationship and very few have even found one positive correlation.”
Interesting. And if you’ve been going around saying that increased availability of porn causes an increase in sex crimes (or at least, that it did through the 1990s; Diamond doesn’t cite more recent findings on this subject), maybe you should stop. But speaking of the difference between correlation and causation, isn’t it kind of a big leap from that to “More porn equals less rape”?

America’s golden age—that is, its sexy stewardess era—of aviation might be over, but Asian airlines still uphold a reputation for hiring beautiful female flight attendants. Over in Japan, Japan Airlines is struggling to curb the smuggling of flight attendant uniforms to the country’s sex clubs. Since announcing bankruptcy in January, JAL has worked to prevent former employees (among others) from selling their uniforms to the black market, which drop major bank for outfits that come with a polaroid of their previous owner.

XRCO announces nominees

(News release: HOLLYWOOD, CA ) – The X-Rated Critics Organization is proud to announce the nominees for the 26th Annual XRCO Awards. As it has for 26 years, members of the XRCO have compiled a list of the most deserving performers, film makers and projects. The resulting nominees will be voted on by XRCO members and winners will be announced at the 26h Annual XRCO Awards on April 29th in Hollywood.

The casual sex backlash is here. Even so-called sex-positive feminists are starting to express their shame and regret over past one-night stands, says Jessica Grose in Slate. This is sure to cause many conservatives to rejoice, but I suspect the report of hookup culture’s death has been greatly exaggerated.
Don't get me wrong: Grose, a writer I greatly respect, makes an intriguing and provocative argument. She offers up plenty of evidence of recent cultural shifts for our consideration. For example:
Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis was put in jail. Christina Aguilera married a nice Jewish boy and had a baby. She’s been replaced on the pop charts by 19-year-old virginal chanteuse Taylor Swift, who sings chaste love songs about Romeo and Juliet. Paris Hilton is rarely in the tabloids and we haven’t seen her nether regions in years. Finally, the fictional Carrie Bradshaw is wed and living a New York domestic fantasy.

There’s nothing quite like watching a big retailer try to tamp down our bottomless appetite for high jinx. Take, for example, the comedy of errors that’s been unfolding over the past several weeks, ever since Apple decided to rein in its more hot and bothered apps. Over 3 billion apps have been downloaded on iTunes since the App store debuted in July of 2008, and, human nature being what is, a fair number of those involve boobies. But in light of increasing consumer complaints from, as Apple’s head of worldwide product marketing, Philip W. Schiller, told the New York Times recently, “women who found the content getting too degrading and objectionable, as well as parents who were upset with what their kids were able to see,” the company began quietly removing content. In just one day in February, Apple purged over 4,000 apps. Arrivederci, Sexy Hangman. Sayonara, Strip Poker. Hasta la vista, Suicide Girls. In its zeal to ban booty, Apple even briefly 86′ed a benign bathing suit shopping app called Simply Beach.
But T&A fans don’t go down without a fight. Faced with the encroaching threat of having their girlie bits taken away, consumers started descending on the App Store like it was a Piggly Wiggly right before a snowmageddon. Let the stripper-app hoarding commence! And when a relatively tame, cleavage-based app called Tubes! somehow escaped the app-ocalypse, it saw its sales leap from a measly $30 a day to a frankly hilarious $10,000 in a single week. Stick it to the man, breast lovers.

The slump is especially stinging because technology — which helped adult-entertainment enterprises reap riches through innovations such as video streaming, webcameras and online payments — is contributing to the misery.
