For the past several decades, a debate has raged as to whether or not pornography yields deleterious effects at the individual and/or societal levels (e.g., increased negative views toward women; increased rate of sexual crimes against women). In many instances, those who have sought to link pornography to countless ills have been ideologically motivated, as the aggregate scientific evidence hardly supports such conclusions. See chapter 6 of my book The Evolutionary Bases of Consumption (p. 228-235) for some relevant references on pornography.

In today’s post, I’d like to briefly report on two recent studies that shed light on the matter. In a paper published in 2009 in the International Journal of Law and Psychiatry, Milton Diamond reviewed a very broad number of studies that have explored the supposed ill effects of pornography. Subsequent to his extensive review, Diamond concludes (p. 312):

“Indeed, the data reported and reviewed suggests that the thesis is myth and, if anything, there is an inverse causal relationship between an increase in pornography and sex crimes. Further, considering the findings of studies of community standards and wide spread usage of SEM [sexually explicit material], it is obvious that in local communities as nationally and internationally, porn is available, widely used and felt appropriate for voluntary adult consumption. If there is a consensus against pornography it is in regard to any SEM that involves children or minors in its production or consumption. Lastly we see that objections to erotic materials are often made on the basis of supposed actual, social or moral harm to women. No such cause and effect has been demonstrated with any negative consequence.”

YouTube on the big screen is great, but what about YouPorn?

Relative newcomers to the battle to bring the Internet into the living room could get an unexpected boost from the adult entertainment industry. The current competitors in the set-top-box space are in a slow push-and-tug, tit-for-tat exchange from which no clear winner has emerged.

Apple TV has the advantages of a brick-and-mortar distribution channel, the digital distribution of iTunes and the still-underutilized advertising might of Apple Inc.

This isn’t one of those stories about how empowering it was to pose naked for a magazine. You’ve read that one already. It usually involves someone who falls just slightly out of the range of superhumanly gorgeous, striking a blow for “real” women everywhere. “Model who isn’t insect thin gets naked for Glamour” — edgy! Miss Universe goes unretouched — keeping it real! “I am showing the world my feminine strength by ditching my underpants!”

Well, that’s not why I did it. And that’s good, because that’s not what happened. So when you see my friends and me nude in New York‘s Time Out this week, don’t assume I’m making a big statement on behalf of my sex, or presume I’m trying to be an example to anybody else. Get your own self-esteem role models, girlfriend.

Why, then, did I disrobe? It’s not like I usually go in for exhibitionism — I’ve never even worn a bikini. When, throughout my 20s and 30s, friends were working as strippers and posing nude in men’s magazines, I never once considered joining their ranks. I wasn’t a naked-getting kind of woman, any more than I’m a NASCAR-driving or oil-fire-putting-out one. I harbor no delusions of being photogenic either. For the author picture for my recent book, the photographer took well over 300 shots and informed me, “I wouldn’t have picked any of them.”

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – Amsterdam‘s deputy mayor proposed new measures Tuesday to help tackle forced prostitution, including restricting opening hours for brothels and raising the minimum age for prostitutes to 23 from 18.

Lodewijk Asscher, who faces re-election in March, said prostitution should be banned between 4 and 8 a.m. to complement existing efforts to fight crime, exploitation and human trafficking in Amsterdam’s 800-year-old red light district.

“Only the biggest creeps and boozers are walking around at those hours,” he said on Dutch radio. “Women really dread working then and sometimes the most vulnerable are used.”

MOSCOW (Reuters) – An enormous television screen showing a pornographic film caused a midnight traffic jam in central Moscow Thursday as stunned motorists slammed on the brakes to gawk at the writhing naked bodies.

The owner of the advertising screen, which sits atop a main road about two km (1.2 miles) south of the Kremlin, told the state-run RIA news agency that hackers had broken into the screen’s computer system and turned on the porn.

“They were either acting out of hooliganism or were from a rival company,” Viktor Laptev, commercial director of advertising firm Panno.ru, told RIA.
