Porn embarrassment may have held back Firefox 3 upgrades – Telegraph Blogs

One of the best things about Firefox 3 was the arrival of the ‘awesome bar’, an enhanced toolbar that predicted where you wanted to go online based on your browsing history and bookmarks.
It’s amazingly useful. These days, for example, whenever I want to check train times I type “rail” into the address bar and Firefox recommends the National Rail train times page. One click and I’m there.
However, when Firefox asked users why they weren’t upgrading from Firefox 2 to Firefox 3 they found that the ‘awesome bar’ was a significant reason. Why on earth would something so useful put so many people off? The answer, you’ll be shocked to learn, is probably porn.

Restriction on ’sexual’ ads would weaken your rights

The Michigan Senate recently passed a bill regulating how “sexually oriented” businesses may advertise on billboards.

These businesses promote legal and often popular, if somewhat tawdry, services, such as adult bookstores, video rentals, strip clubs and the like.
Most people aren’t overtly sympathetic to their advertising interests.

Every once in a while there comes a dramatic reminder of the magnitude of our country’s sexual hangups. A new advertisement from the Department of Health and Human Services‘ “Parents Speak Up” campaign, which Feministe alerted us to, is just that. It’s like a collective psych analysis distilled into a 30-second TV spot, and our sexual subconscious is personified as a father scared shitless about having the sex talk.
“We know it’s hard to talk to your kids about sex. It’s embarrassing”
The ad opens with the panic-stricken pop walking over to his daughter, and then — blam! — he runs into an invisible wall. Like a mime, he works his way around it only to stumble backward when he sets sight on his little girl clad in a modest pink frock. Then he labors to pull himself across the room with the help of an invisible rope.
Throughout this juvenile act, his daughter — or a girl meant as a representative youth voice — instructs in a voiceover: “Just tell us how you feel. Tell us what you want us to do. Tell us to wait to have sex.” On its own, that’s a fine message for an adolescent; yes, it’s a great idea to wait to have sex. But the ad also explains to parents: “We know it’s hard to talk to your kids about sex. It’s embarrassing.” She continues, “You don’t have to be explicit about it. You don’t have to talk about ‘the parts.’” God forbid having to utter the words “penis” and vagina” in front of your kids — how humiliating.

Pop Vox : Porn Parody of TV Sitcoms Is Adult Entertainment’s ‘New Gold Rush’

In a 2001 episode of Friends, Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) complains to a hotel clerk that she’s not to blame for some of the charges on her bill. “Sir, for the last time, I don’t care what the computer says. We did not take a bag of Mashuga Nuts from the minibar, and we did not watch Doctor Do-Me-a-Little.” This July, Friends got a porn parody of its own (see above), one of the many sitcom-based porn movies that have popped up in the past few years, some obvious (Three’s Company practically writes itself), others less so (Seinfeld? Honestly?). This recent spate of parody porn stems from the success of 2007’s Not the Bradys XXX. Jeff Mullen, who writes and directs under the name Will Ryder, helmed the Brady spoof and has since directed a sequel, as well as parodies of Bewitched, The Cosby Show, and most recently, Married With Children. He spoke to NEWSWEEK’s Joshua Alston.
What’s been up?
I’m feeling good. Just wrapped eight days of shooting the next episode of The Brady Bunch spoof. Incredible grueling hours. Whipping the cast into shape. Locking the doors, not letting them leave, that kind of thing.
So there’s a third one coming down the pike?
The third one is coming out at the end of October, and it’s the best one so far. We completely revamped and built all the sets from scratch rather than shoot in a house. And so we built the living room, everything. The set looks exactly like The Brady Bunch. It’s pretty impressive.

NEW YORK — It seems the only nudes allowed at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art are the ones in the collection.
Police say they arrested a 26-year-old woman who was posing naked for a photographer, and in full view of visitors, in the museum’s arms and armor department on Wednesday.Model Kathleen “K.C.” Neill faces a charge of public lewdness.
Defense attorney Donald Schechter says the museum is full of nude art, and to call what the model and her photographer were doing obscenity “is ridiculous.”

Human sexuality, in all its glorious, fascinating diversity, should be a limitless source of entertainment. So why are so many TV sex advice shows either horrifying or boring? Remember “Loveline,” the radio show that made it to MTV in the late ’90s? Before turning up on “The Man Show” and “Celebrity Rehab,” the program’s classy hosts, Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew, were infamous for insisting to a huge number of female callers that they must have been sexually abused as children. Even my favorite sex advice show, Oxygen’s “Talk Sex with Sue Johanson,” can get old: The novelty of watching a grandmotherly woman (however adorable) dispense tips on vibrators and orgasms just wears off after a while. Apparently viewers agreed. The show went off the air in the U.S. in 2008.
And that’s why I’m so excited to hear that Dan Savage, of “Savage Love” fame, is shooting a pilot for HBO. The syndicated sex columnist writes that his series, which would also be titled “Savage Love,” “will focus on current events and cultural trends with sex as the filter.” And his approach to the show seem specially designed to fill the TV sex programming void: “I’m hoping to bring a new kind of conversation to TV about sex — an honest conversation, one that’s informed without being (too) wonky, funny without being (too) cruel, sexy without being (too) cheesy. Basically, my sex advice column — but on the teevee!”
Well, hooray for that! The prospect of Savage getting his own show is exciting on many levels: For one thing, the kinky and complicated topics he takes on never hurt for entertainment value. And I’d love to see his nonjudgmental “good, giving and game” ethos expand its influence beyond the writer’s devoted following of alt-weekly readers. Savage never sugarcoats, and his candidness only makes his advice more trustworthy. In a recent (NSFW, obvi) podcast, he tells a caller whose boyfriend has been choking her during sex, “I would not see this guy again if I were you — ever. He is an unsafe, untrustworthy, emotionally sadistic piece of shit. And you shouldn’t fuck him ever again.”
