I’ve seen a lot of Hayden Panettiere bikini pictures in my time (it’s what I do), and there is something decidedly diferent about this set from the new issue of Details magazine. You could say the devil is in the details… But that would be a really bad pun. Which is why I said it. I love bad puns. Anywas… The “details” I’m referring to this time, if you haven’t guessed, are Hayden Panettiere’s breasts, which in real life are nowhere near as big as they appear in these pictures. Now, I don’t know if this is some lame post-production Photoshopping on the part of the editors, or if Hayden’s handlers thought it would be a good idea to stuff a whole chicken into her bikini top (those ain’t no cutlets), but this is just ridiculous. Ladies, there’s nothing wrong with having small breasts. Just try not to have a big ass.

Oops! She did it again. Miley Cyrus has stirred up controversy with another raunchy magazine photo shoot. This time, the 16-year-old has traded the bed-head, sheet-wrapped look of her Vanity Fair photos for tight cleavage-boosting leather on the cover of Elle magazine, alongside the declaration that “she’s not a kid anymore.” Inside the August issue she’s pictured reclining on a table wearing sexy thigh-high “hooker boots,” as one blogger put it. Just as with the Annie Leibovitz shots of last year, some folks are downright apoplectic. So begins yet another chapter in our tome of hypocrisy toward young female sexuality.

The outrage has so little to do with her being sexualized and everything to do with the way she’s being sexualized. We’re all too happy to see her clad in a girly frock and schoolgirl socks — however, black thigh-high boots, and a black pushup bra? Horrors, that’s a child! But in both cases she’s an eroticized 16-year-old celebrity who has been very successfully marketed and sold to the masses. It’s the straightforwardness of the sexual imagery in the Elle photos that trips our cultural inappropriateness alarm. Instead of sexualizing her childlike innocence and naiveté, it pictures her as a sexually motivated and experienced teenager (similar to the apparently outrageous bedsheet photo). Miley has crossed that fine cultural line between sexy purity and sexiness that is actually sexual.

It’s like we’ve burst in on her in the dressing room of Victoria’s Secret while she’s practicing seductive poses in the mirror; she’s gone for everything lacy and black and tight, the most overwrought and obvious sexual signaling available. Or, as Salon’s Sarah Hepola exclaimed to me: “Those are the boots of a 38-year-old woman in midlife crisis!” That isn’t to tease her — hell, who hasn’t been there and done that? Girls often strut down the runway to womanhood dressed as a caricature of adult sexuality, stumbling and tugging at ill-fitting clothes and errant bra straps as they go. Unlike Miley, though, most of us are lucky enough to not have it broadcast for, and sold to, the whole of America.

A big story in this month’s edition of O. magazine starts out with a sex educator in the basement of a church teaching a room full of students how to masturbate in public. “It’s nice just to be touched at all,” says one woman. “It made me wish someone else were touching me,” says another. OK, disclaimer here: For the purpose of the exercise, the students were merely touching their own hands with their eyes closed. And everyone in the room was over the age of 18; most were over the age of 35. Still, the fascinating question provoked by this piece on adult sex education is this: What would sex ed look like if one began from the rather obvious premise that everyone in the room would have sex and that the goal is to give each person the best means to ensure they enjoy it as much as possible?

My first (admittedly unnuanced) take upon first reading this piece was to say: See what happens to people who first learn of sex in a culture of fear? Fear of teen pregnancy leads to sexless marriages, ill-advised hikes on the Appalachian Trail, and the subsequent demise of the American family!

That, of course, is the flamethrower in me talking. The adult sex-education courses described in the piece are run by the (fairly liberal) Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church in Christ in Austin, under the very unsexy sounding moniker OWL (which stands for Our Whole Lives) and deal quite specifically with some of the issues around sex that come up in mid-life, such as: “How do I enjoy my sexuality if I’ve lost a breast to cancer? How do I manage being a parent and a sexual person? Can I feel sexually satisfied if I don’t have a life partner?” These questions, says Michael Tino, a Unitarian minister who also happens to have a PhD in cell biology (yay for science-based sex ed!) don’t come up in the high school gym for the very simple reason that “Teenagers don’t have them yet. Most of what affects our sexuality happens in adulthood — long-term relationships, breakups, parenthood, illness, sheer exhaustion from managing life.”
