KOLKATA: The economic slowdown has affected nearly every profession, and the world’s oldest is no exception. Thousands of commercial
in Sonagachhi have been singed. A contracting clientele, coupled with spiralling real-estate prices in the area, has driven them to reduce rates and spend more time on the streets.
The worst affected are the approximately 1000 Category A workers, who charge minimum of Rs 1,500 per hour. Restricted from going on to the streets to lure customers and completely dependent on pimps to get business, these workers are slashing their rates.
“Till a few years back, we got five customers a day. Now, it is rare to get three. As a result, Category A girls, who charged up to Rs 8,000 per hour earlier, now hardly ask for more than Rs 4,000,” said Rekha, herself a Category A worker.

A British diplomat in Russia has resigned after he was filmed having sex with two prostitutes.
James Hudson, 37, quit his post as deputy consul general in the Urals city of Ekaterinburg over the video.
The grainy images obtained by a hidden video camera show a British diplomat James Hudson romping on a bed in a brothel with two Russian prostitutes.

Another great tidbit — “Global revenue from pornography on mobile devices will more than double to $4.9 billion in the five years to 2013, while music sales will grow by about a third, said Juniper, which provides global research on the telecommunication industry and includes Finland’s Nokia Oyj, the world’s largest maker of mobile phones, Apple and Microsoft Corp. among its clients.” And that 91 million Japanese surf the Internet from their phones.

Hubba, hubba: Island pinups

Last July, Kristen Leigh Conklin was looking for an art project to pursue on the Island.
Tonight, Ms. Conklin and her business partner, Gregory Michael Bennett, will premier Fish ‘N’ Chicks, a 16-month pinup calendar at a release party at the Oyster Bar Grill in Oak Bluffs. The party begins at 10 pm, open to the public.
The 11 by 17 inch swimsuit calendar, presented in the classic 1940s “Vargas girls” pinup design, features 20 mostly Island women, tastefully photographed by Ms. Conklin (aka Miss July 2010) at familiar Island locales from Tashmoo to the Menemsha dock.
