AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – Amsterdam city council is turning its attention to a pressing problem for one of the city's key business sectors — banking and credit for prostitutes who can't get accounts from mainstream institutions.

The city's red light district is famed the world over for its women in tiny windows and even tinier clothing, but despite the trade being legal, many banks shy away from taking the ladies on as customers.

As part of the city's “Project 1012″ to remake the De Wallen neighborhood, which includes the sex district, the city council has been asked to find a way to help bordello owners and sex workers gain more access to banks.

FREEHOLD, N.J. —

Protections given to journalists in New Jersey do not apply to people who post online, a judge has ruled.

Too Much Media, a Freehold-based firm, wants Shellee Hale of Washington state to reveal her sources for message board posts she made claiming its customer information was compromised last year. The firm, which provides software used by pornographic sites, denies customer information was breached.

Hale argued she’s protected by shield laws for journalists.

Let’s face it: We’re a world that loves smut. More than a third of Internet users surf to salacious sites on a semiregular basis, according to some purely academic research cited in a recent Harvard study (PDF). Most of those users hit nearly eight X-rated sites each month — and, even with a typical visit lasting only 11.6 minutes (insert inappropriate joke here), that can add up to an awful lot of video-based bandwidth.

As smartphones become more advanced and more common, one has to wonder how much of that viewing may spill over into the mobile world. More important, though, is what that could mean: With on-the-go data speeds already being a common source of complaint, a spike in heavy adult-oriented downloads just might convince carriers to consider some kind of mobile bandwidth caps in the future.
