She calls herself “Diamond.” And thanks to Craigslist, the 25-year-old prostitute hopes never to walk the dusty streets of Reno, Nev., again.

But when the San Francisco-based Web site pulled the plug Wednesday on its “erotic services” section, Diamond’s luck may have run out. Coming under fire from law enforcement in several states and facing bad publicity over a recent murder case in Boston, Craigslist said it was replacing the old category with a new one, “adult services,” that will be actively monitored by employees.

In recent years, sex workers have flocked to Craigslist and other Web sites, believing cyberspace to be a much safer way to meet new clients than pounding the pavement. “You know they have access to a computer, to the Internet,” says Diamond, suggesting that it means they’re maybe a little less likely to be deranged or crack-addled. “They can read. It just feels more … professional.”

Aspiring Lingerie Football League (LFL) players participated in an open tryout session on Thursday to join the New York Majesty team.

The LFL has ten teams nationwide and will start its new season in September. About two dozen young women participated.

An art investor in Hallandale, Fla., who died last year at 57, he stored crateloads at his apartment and nearby warehouses. “He was notorious for being just a pack rat, and extremely secretive,” said Ed Jaster, a vice president at Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas. “You could barely walk around his home, and he would only take you out to his storage facilities in the middle of the night, when nobody else was around to see what he had.” He added, “He was a kook-ball, but really endearing.”

Heritage will be selling Mr. Martignette’s inventory of about 4,300 illustrations in half a dozen sales over the next few years. (Three trucks, each 53 feet long, have hauled the pictures to Dallas.) On Thursday and Friday, Heritage will display about 30 examples at the Ukrainian Institute of America at 2 East 79th Street in Manhattan. The preview fare ranges from images for pulp novels like “The Corpse Was Beautiful” and “Whelps of the Wolf” to Saturday Evening Post covers with portraits of World War I soldiers or children playing cowboy to women painted by the pin-up artists Alberto Vargas and Gil Elvgren.

Mr. Martignette (pronounced mar-tin-YET-tee) was best known for acquiring original pinup artwork, often directly from calendar printing houses. “He drove all over in the ’70s and ’80s and picked these things up for nickels,” Mr. Jaster said. Mr. Martignette helped write scholarly books on the subject, including “The Great American Pin-Up” (Taschen), but only a quarter of his collection is actually soft pornography. When shopping for portraits by Norman Rockwell or scenes of detectives rescuing tied-up damsels, he had two main criteria: the piece had to be American and aimed at the masses.

In the arid landscape of late-1960s television, largely devoted to quasi-realistic forms like the family sitcom or the police procedural, “Star Trek” was new and startling in several different ways: a science-fiction series that was literary and imaginative and heavily allegorical, that ladled out historical and political messages by the quart and that delivered a distinctive undertone of adult sexuality.

OK, yes, it might be better described as a swaggering, Hefneresque and profoundly sexist version of semi-adult, semi-repressed sexuality. Preening Kirk, arguably the most sexualized male character in TV history, tomcats from one interstellar honey to the next. In Season 1, beehive-haired Yeoman Rand (Grace Lee Whitney) seems to serve as his personal concubine, but for that matter there’s something haremlike about the female personnel aboard the Enterprise in toto. They all apparently departed on a five-year space mission directly from their other jobs as go-go dancers behind Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.

Nurse Chapel (Majel Barrett, later Roddenberry’s wife) moons pathetically for the chaste and logical Spock, who is himself locked in a sub-rosa competition with the bitchy and sexually ambiguous “Bones” McCoy (DeForest Kelley) for Kirk’s attention. Spock pretends not to notice Chapel, but behaves like an outrageous tease; in “Amok Time,” he strokes her tear-stained cheek and murmurs, “It would be illogical for us to protest against our natures.”

But hey, this stew of delightful and appalling ingredients produced the first black-white kiss in the history of American narrative television, the aliens-made-them-do-it snog between Kirk and Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) in the 1968 episode “Plato’s Stepchildren.” (Contrary to legend, that smokin’-hot moment did not produce widespread outrage in the American South. Widespread arousal, certainly.) In the same scene, Chapel finally gets to kiss Spock, while protesting the whole time that she really, really didn’t want it to happen like this.

There seems to be no end to Catholic sex scandals. In mid-April we learned that the former bishop of San Pedro Paraguay, who resigned from the priesthood to become president of that country, had multiple affairs with women and fathered at least one child (and probably more). Earlier in May, a tabloid caught Father Alberto Cutie, the Miami-based talk show host known as “Padre Oprah,” kissing and frolicking with his girlfriend.

Now comes the news that former Archbishop Rembert Weakland has written a memoir in which he admits for the first time that he is gay. Weakland resigned in 2002 after news broke that he had paid off Paul Marcoux, an adult male who claimed he’d had a sexual relationship with the bishop. Weakland denied the charges; the payment made that hard to believe.

Coming out of the closet at 82 must be painful. It is also tragic — so much time lost hiding from yourself and others. Perhaps most touching in Weakland’s revelations is his acknowledgment of “how lonely it is to be a bishop.” Or, I’d add, an ordinary priest.

Female gorillas get friskier when their silverback has sex with another female, even when they themselves cannot conceive. The finding suggests they use sex to gain an advantage over competing females.

Tara Stoinski and colleagues at Zoo Atlanta in Georgia totted up how often four captive female gorillas invited sex or copulated over two years. They found that even pregnant or lactating females solicited more sex on days when other females were sexually active.

With only one male around, females could not have been trying to confuse him about his paternity, one commonly offered explanation for non-reproductive sex.
