If human culture seems obsessed with sex lately, it’s nothing new. Archaeologists have discovered the oldest known artistic representation of a woman – a carved ivory statue of a naked female, dating from 35,000 years ago.
The figurine, unearthed in September 2008 in Hohle Fels Cave in southwestern Germany, may be the oldest known example of figurative art, meaning art that is supposed to represent and resemble a real person, animal or object. The discovery could help scientists understand the origins of art and the advent of symbolic thinking, including complicated language.
“If there’s one conclusion you want to draw from this, it’s that an obsession with sex goes back at least 35,000 years,” University of Cambridge anthropologist Paul Mellars told LiveScience. He was not involved in the new finding. “But if humans hadn’t been largely obsessed with sex they wouldn’t have survived for the first 2 million years. None of this is at all surprising.”

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz warned parents Wednesday of the dangers of “sexting” — the increasingly common practice of sharing sexually explicit photos and words via text messaging.
The Florida Democrat was joined at a press conference by Cynthia Logan, whose daughter Jessie took her own life after a “sexting” incident.
“She was fun loving, she was vivacious, she was a silly 18-year-old,” Logan said of her daughter. “And she made a very foolish choice of taking a nude photograph and sending it to a boy she was dating.”

MAY 13–With Craigslist today announcing a crackdown on classified ads offering sex for money, prostitutes everywhere will have to come up with alternative ways to promote their illegal services. However, the marketing scheme cooked up recently by one Iowa woman should not be copied. Samantha Jo Daniel, 18, was arrested last Friday after cops learned of a handwritten flyer posted in the elevator of an apartment building in Marshalltown. According to a police press release, Daniel’s ad “gave the number of an individual who was willing to sell sex for money.” Daniel was nabbed in an undercover sting operation and charged with a misdemeanor prostitution count. She was booked into the Marshall County Jail, where the below mug shot was taken. “In other cities, you hear about it in the personal ads and on Craigslist, but we just don’t see much of that here,” one police official remarked to the Times-Republican newspaper. CHICAGO — Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says that Craigslist is getting rid of its “erotic services” ads and will create a new adult category that Web site employees will review.
Madigan’s office said Wednesday that such existing ads on Craigslist will expire in seven days.
Madigan and the attorneys general for Connecticut and Missouri met with Craigslist officials last week seeking an end to ads they contend are advertisements for illegal sexual activities.
