A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states.

“When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different,” says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.

Was it good for you?

If you’re like a lot of men, chances are it wasn’t. At least, the sex wasn’t as good as you think it could have been.

You were addled with anxiety, plagued by concerns over your performance, and worried about the worthiness of your physique during lovemaking. Even if the act achieved the idealized heights of a Hollywood screenplay — she melted at your touch, you thundered like a stallion, you writhed in unison to volcanic climax — you still harbor suspicions: You’re pretty much certain you’re not getting it as often as everyone else.

Miss Atom, the beauty contest for the Russian nuclear industry, has earned a fair amount of press, in part because of the now-infamous photo of a post-Soviet hottie posing in front of some cooling towers. But the anti-nuke crowd has its own contest: The Environmentals.

The rules? “Use real nuclear power plants as backdrop for fashion or glamor shots! No lab montage or Photoshop!” Clothing, as this shot from the decommissioned Trojan nuclear power plant in Oregon demonstrates, is optional. (Some of the originals, obviously, are NSFW.)

Thus far, the contest has received only seven entries; Miss Atom, on the other hand, has dozens of contestants. Voting is still ongoing at Miss Atom, by the way. Yulia Nechayeva of Polyarnye Zori is in the lead with 1,149 points; DANGER ROOM favorite Alyona Kirsanova is in fourth place.

She was a 16-year-old California girl looking for trouble on MySpace; he was a 22-year-old self-described pimp who liked the revealing photos she posted to her profile. Three weeks after they met on the social networking site, they were arrested together in real life outside a cheap motel in Sacramento, 50 miles from her home. She was turning tricks. On her arm, a fresh tattoo showed bundles of cash and her new acquaintance’s street moniker in 72-point cursive.

Last week, Marvin Chavelle Epps was held without bail on federal child pornography charges over a video found at his arrest, in which the girl is seen performing a sex act on him while he calls her “bitch” and slaps her in the head with a roll of bills. Though the girl, identified as “S.M.” in court documents, denied to police that he was her manager, by his own account Epps is a new kind of pimp — a web-savvy exploiter who uses sites like myRedBook and Craigslist to broker his women.

“I don’t put girls on the blade,” he wrote an associate in a chat log recovered by police. “It’s Y2K pimpin’.”

Strippers and strip clubs are one of those polarizing gender phenomenons that divide men and women almost squarely down the middle. (We’d venture even more so than porn, actually.)

Most men (at least once in their lives, stop lying fellas) have been to and thoroughly enjoyed their stay at a strip club. Perhaps even shelling out a wrinkled $20 or two for a lap dance (or four). No judgements here!

On the flipside, a lubed-up, g-string dressed man asking a group of ladies to part with any of their cash so he can shake his butt in their face is an excellent way to earn a laugh. Believe us, we know. Ladies get strippers for a party and we get a good giggle. Men get strippers for a party and pray they don’t finish in their pants.

Penthouse (magazine)

A porn star draping boobs over an employee’s head. Lapdances on the company dime. $50 million in back taxes. These are just some of the charges Penthouse publisher FriendFinder Networks is facing from an ex-employee.

Natalie Cedeno, the company’s former HR director, says that company executives retaliated against her for pointing out violations of labor laws. She was a top executive at the Internet side of the business, deeply involved in its operations for eight years, before FriendFinder fired her without cause in January, she says. She claims the company then tried to withhold the two years of pay she was owed under her contract unless she agreed to stay silent about FriendFinder’s misdeeds — a move her lawyer characterizes as “extortion.” Cedeno plans to file complaints with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and California‘s Department of Fair Employment and Housing next month.

And a juicy complaint it will be. FriendFinder Networks used to be called Penthouse Media Group before it acquired Various Inc., the operator of Adult FriendFinder and other online personals sites, in 2007 for $500 million. While they’re both porn companies, the office cultures of Florida-based Penthouse and Silicon Valley-based Various Inc. — where Cedeno worked before the merger — couldn’t have been more different. That became obvious on May 2, 2008, when the ex-Penthouse executives, now in charge of the combined business, decided to ship in a passel of Penthouse Pets to the old Various offices.

Philip José Farmer, a prolific and popular science fiction writer who shocked readers in the 1950s by depicting sex with aliens and challenged conventional pieties of the genre with caustic fables set on bizarre worlds of his own devising, died Wednesday. He was 91 and lived in Peoria, Ill.

His official Web site, pjfarmer.com, announced his death, saying he had “passed away peacefully in his sleep.”

Mr. Farmer’s blend of intellectual daring and pulp-fiction prose found a worldwide audience. His more than 75 books have been translated into 22 languages and published in more than 40 countries. Though he wrote many short stories, he was best known for his many series of multiple novels. These sprawling, episodic works gave him room to explore the nuances of a provocative premise while indulging his taste for lurid, violent action.

LAS VEGAS - JANUARY 09: Adult film actress Gi...

Maybe the answer isn’t getting rid of porn, but exposing ourselves to more of it. And not just porn, all things sexual. Toys, workshops, bodies. Let me explain: I spent a weekend at the Adult Video Network Adult Entertainment Expo and Awards Show. I was exposed to vibrators that look like rubber duckies and masturbation devices for men, girls in bikinis blowing up balloons until they popped and films made to titillate that showed only bare feet. I saw women wearing nothing but paint, dancers sliding up and down slick poles, film stars signing autographs while wearing little more than a smile.

As I flew to Vegas, I have to admit, I wondered how all of it would make me feel—I imagined a short, average looking 38-old in the middle of all this skin and glitter. Would I feel ugly? Grossed out? Uncomfortable? Sad? Angry? Truth be told, I felt it all at one point or another throughout the weekend. It’s a lot to process. But more than anything, believe it or not, I felt sexy.

No, really.
